Well it’s time to say goodbye to Harper’s closest companion… The monkey pacifier! Even thinking about conquering this task gave me anxiety! We are now on day 3, and I have to say it hasn’t been as bad as I expected. What I expected was my sweet Harper transforming into a mini chucky and her head spinning around in a full 360. So I expected the worse.
My son, Brooks, never got attached to his paci like Harper did. He just kind of ended that relationship at 6 months on his own. Harper on the other hand is another story. She would find a pacifier under the couch that had been lost for months. I swear she had a radar on those things.
She would make the house tremble when she expressed her need for her pacifier. With that being said… I was TERRIFIED to end it. My husband and I decided after her first birthday that would be it! We had to do it together!
We did it cold turkey… We literally hid the pacifiers and decided it was done. R.I.P. Pacifier!
Day one was ridiculous…. We took her to toys r us and every head turned when they heard my sweet daughter screaming to the top of her lungs… Even Geoffrey the Giraffe gasped. After our oh so adventurous trip, we decided it may be easier just to keep her at home. The rest of the day wasn’t so bad. The first night she woke up at midnight searching for it, and it took every fiber in me not to just toss the old friend in her crib. But I decided I did not conquer the first day and trip to toys r us for nothing.
Day 2 got easier. She slept thru the night with no problem, and the day wasn’t a crying fest.
Here we are on day 3, and I think her dear friend may be forgotten. Crossing my fingers!
Getting rid of the paci is like ripping off an old band aide. You just got to do it.
Tips to get rid of that nasty paci:
-Take it cold turkey. Out of site….EVENTUALLY (typically 3-4 days) out of mind
-Trim it down day by day. Cut the pacifier a little at a time. Eventually he/she will want to let it go.
-Have a heart to heart. You are a big girl now. Big girls do not need pacifiers, but you can trade the old pacifier for something big girls have. You can take your child to the store to look for a trade-in.
-Ask him if he would like to retire his pacifier and give it to a newborn baby. Some babies will have the “I am older than you” mentality where they will give it to a younger baby to feel a little bit taller.
-I am a fan of parties, so of course you could always throw a huge “Bye Paci” party. Make it big…. CELEBRATE your butt off!
